This is our most basic argument. You might even think of it as a five-paragraph argument, on steroids. However, thinking of it as simple would be a grave mistake. With each argument, we will add to our strategies.
What are you passionate about? What do you talk with your friends and family about? Is it politics? Your major? Science? Family? Culture? Language? All of the above?
Argument requires not only deep understanding and knowledge of your topic, but the ability to see it from all perspectives. That means, you should also be able to argue the opposite perspective equally well. You should anticipate and rebut counterarguments.
Familiarize yourself with logical fallacies and make sure you are not using them!
Forbidden Topics: If your position is based on your religion or spirituality, it is probably not a good topic. We can’t generally sway people on those topics, and we don’t necessarily take criticism well either.
Tone and voice are always important, but, when arguing, it is important to find the right balance between assertive/knowledgeable and condescending. Be extra cautious of how you present yourself to your readers.
Audience: Your audience is the ASU community.
Length and Sources: This essay should be 4-6 pages long and requires at least three outside sources, at least one of which must be be scholarly. You are responsible for finding enough sources to support your essay. With some topics, that may take more than two. Be sure to cite them, both in the text and on a Works Cited page in MLA style or a References page in APA style.
