Case Study: Joe’s Supermarket

This local supermarket is located in an urban neighborhood and provides customers with a wide

array of products to choose from. Over time, the inventory has grown exponentially, but the

current information system is not equipped to handle the increase in purchase demand. The

company that owns the store opted to go with the “light” versions of the Purchasing and Point of

Sale (POS) modules used to manage inventory and request products from vendors. The owner of

the organization (Joe Russo) has emphasized that there are critical things on his “wish list” that

he believes will move the supermarket into “the new tech age,” but he is not sure where to start.

Here is some information he wants the IT consultant to know, but there is more likely additional

information he is unaware of:

• Other processes that are part of the enterprise resource planning system are becoming

slower, and some of the staff noticed errors in some of the product data coming into the


• A centralized database supports the entire system but has not been reviewed or upgraded.

• The time spent on customer transactions is too long! Anyone in management should be

able to monitor transactions in real-time, but the point of sale system sends the data “over

the wire” to the database slower each day. Some days there is a 2-hour lag in the system

catching up on transactions!


This week, you will create a business process reengineering plan to document and support the

need for the case study organization (Joe’s Supermarket) to make changes in the systems


Be sure to include the following in your plan:

▪ Identify the implementation steps to be taken during the BPR cycle and related goals.

▪ Develop a narrative describing the business process being reengineered, dependent

systems, and an analysis of the impact on related and interdependent business


▪ Perform research on the typical costs and benefits associated with the proposed type of

systems project. Using a list of estimated costs and quantification of direct and indirect

benefits, create a simple cost-benefit analysis that shows the value of engaging in the

BPR project for the specified information systems.

▪ Compare the different approaches to business process modeling (activity -flow, data

flow, object-oriented, holistic, use case) and justify the methods chosen for the

business process reengineering plan.

▪ Provide a narrative that describes the definition, primary values, key features, and

steps used in each system analysis and design (SAD) methodology presented in the

literature in the weekly resources.

▪ Use the “to be” diagrams created in last week to embed both the annotated data flow

diagram that clearly shows the revised flow of data throughout the organization and

the revised process model diagram of the system to show the revisions in the business

process and new state of the system. Add any additional necessary synchronous

information communication interactions to the data flow diagram.

▪ Provide a narrative that makes a clear business case for the systems project, making

sure to justify conclusions by referencing information provided in the business process

reengineering plan.

model) in the appendix. Page count does not include the title and reference pages.
