Interview report: Writing in your Field

In this report, you will interview a professional in Computer Science field about the writing that they do in
order to find out what advice they have for entering graduate students about writing. You will also find a
representative paper from Computer Science field to analyze to learn about the common genres in your
field. You can pick a paper from the professional you interview, or another representative paper from
Computer Science field.

Steps (You don’t have to do this in real, but you should simulate these steps in your mind.)
• Brainstorm the candidates to be interviewed. Ideally it would be someone in your field such as a

professor or outside practitioner. If you pick a graduate student, it should be someone who is
finishing a phd. A class list will be compiled to avoid duplicating people being interviewed (It is
possible to do this report as a team project- ask me)

• Write a professional email to that person requesting an interview either by Zoom or by email – their
choice

o Choose a backup.
o Contact the backup if the first choice does not reply in 2-3 days.

• Conduct the interview (in person, by phone, or by email) and take notes. If you wish to record, you
must get their permission.

Your report should:
• Report your findings in a 4-5 page (double spaced) using report format with headings.
• Include the following sections:

o Introduction.
o Brief Methodology (how, when interview took place) (can include this in the introduction)
o Results/ Discussion:

▪ Findings from the interview (summary of interview)
▪ Findings from the Writing sample

• Consider three or four of the following when you are analyzing your
articles: audience, purpose, organization, style, and presentation.

• Alternatively, you could focus on the author’s style and discuss three or
four of these stylistic choices in your paper: Latinate vs. multi-word verbs,
nominalization, first-person pronouns, contractions, negative forms, vague
expressions, second-person pronouns, direct vs. indirect questions, adverb
placement, split infinitives, information flow, and linking phrases. Refer to
Unit One in Swales and Feak (2012)

o Conclusion/Recommendation: Include some reflection and analysis of writing in your field
and what is needed to achieve the necessary writing skills.

There is a sample report (not perfect) for you.
