Description: An effective summary demonstrates a student’s ability to provide a concise and accurate rephrasing of a text with enough information so that the reader can understand the main idea and purpose of the original text based on the summary. Directions · Review your lesson materials on summarizing. · Using the annotation and paraphrasing skills we worked on in class, prepare a written summary of one the three essays posted on BB. · Submit your word-processed summary in a Word document or PDF via Bb by next class. Checklist · First sentence introduces the author’s full name, year of publication, title of the text, and text’s main message or thesis · Consistently uses the author’s last name throughout the summary to clearly give credit to the author’s ideas · Incorporates reporting verbs to link ideas to the author · Is entirely written in the student’s own words (paraphrased). Includes no more than one short (5 words) direct quotation from the text. · Is approximately one quarter to one third the length of the original text. · Does not include student opinions or interpretations · Follows APA referencing (summary in-text citation, Reference citation). |
